What's Wicked about?

Often considered to be the iconic musical from the start of the 21st century, Wicked is one of the most popular shows in London. It was created in 2003 on Broadway by the composer Stephen Schwarz (The Prince of Egypt) and the librettist Winnie Holzman, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story takes place in the fantastical world of the Land of Oz.

Wicked is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz. In the Land of Oz, we celebrate the defeat of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and the triumph of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. Through flashbacks, the show retraces their shared past. Before being a witch, Elphaba was rejected as a child because of her green skin. She befriends Glinda, her college roommate. The two friends will discover that the Wizard of Oz, who governs the country, is an impostor in a downward spiral towards dictatorship. Elphaba then decides to fight him while Glinda refuses to join the resistance. Glinda will eventually manage to get rid of the magician and help Elphaba escape from the land of Oz by pretending to be dead.

Why should you see Wicked?

The biggest success in Broadway from the start of 21st century, Wicked reimagines the characters from the Wizard of Oz, an American literature classic.

Since 2003, Wicked has won 3 Tony Awards and 6 Helpmann Awards and played over 6000 performances in London.

The musical's success lies in its sophisticated set, effective group choreography, the artists' vocal performances, but also due to its libretto, full of clever twists. Children will certainly be amazed by the sets and costumes, but adults will be blown away by the magic of this production. The themes addressed are universal: love, friendship, accepting differences. The humour is well done, thanks to the genius of the lyricist Stephen Schwarz.

In 2003, Wicked discovered the actress Idina Menzel, the original performer of the famous Let it go! from Frozen! In almost 20 years, Wicked has become a classic, and its not to be missed if you want a magical evening with family or friends!

The way that it preceded the Wither of Oz, coming right up to the end of the original story but giving it a nicer ending made for extra enjoyment and interest. The talent on show from the cast were second to none and added to a totally enjoyable evening. The changing of the sets made it the shortest two and a half hours that I have had in a long time

Amazing show! The singing was fantastic, the story line was edge of your seat interesting, and the entire company was incredibly talented. It really brought to life the backstory of a movie I watched many times as a child, as well as bringing awareness to the issue of bullying and the importance of not judging others without first getting to know them.

We saw a great production: the costumes, the many sets, the quality of the songs and the choreography. Lots of energy on stage, we experienced a very beautiful moment of magic!!!! To anyone who wants to be transported to the wonderful (and slightly terrifying!) world of Oz, I definitely recommend!!!!!

Absolutely phenomenal!!!!! Superb performances, magnificent venue, efficient helpful staffing team! We purchased tickets as part of a girly weekend with my 13yr old daughter - she loved the show from start to finish. Highly recommend for young and old alike. The show is nearly 3 hours in length but with a quick interval break in the middle, we really didn’t notice how long it was.

An unforgettable family evening before Christmas! The show was absolutely perfect. Both teenagers and parents loved it (we're a family of 14). A festival of colours, music, acting, songs, costumes which were all beautiful. Thank you so much!

The show is magnificent, superb sets and costumes, it's a delight! The length isn't a problem, it felt like no time that passed. Nevertheless, the fact that food and drink are allowed during the performance is annoying. The noises, smells, and dirt and are disgusting and it ruined a lot of things!!

Wicked was just fantastic! I loved the show from start to finish. It allows you to see the characters of the Wizard of Oz from a totally different angle compared to the original story. The script is very moving, and we fell in love with Elphaba, who, in the end, only had the misfortune of being born with green skin... There are many twists and turns, all set to music of course! Many songs punctuate the story, making it a real treat for musical fans. I highly recommend this show, it's well worth the trip!
