Starlight Express is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Richard Stilgoe (lyrics). The show tells the story of Rusty, a young steam locomotive, who falls in love with Pearl, a first-class wagon. To get noticed by Pearl, Rusty takes on the challenge of winning a race against the fastest locomotives!

To create Starlight Express, Andrew Lloyd Webber worked with Trevor Nunn (director) and Richard Stilgoe (lyrics), who was involved with Cats in 1981. Trevor Nunn had the genius idea to make Starlight Express a unique musical: the actors will be on roller skates to perfectly show the speed of the trains, the show's main characters. The collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe will continue until 1986 with the musical The Phantom of the Opera.
Nearly 20 million people around the world have seen Starlight Express. The show was performed all over the world (UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Germany) bringing in nearly $1.2 billion in revenue. In Germany, Starlight Express has been performed continually in Bochum since 1988, in a theatre especially designed for the musical.
