Girl from the North Country tells the story of the Laine family's struggles in the winter of 1934, at the height of the Great Depression.
Nick Laine, the owner of a guest house in Minnesota, is facing foreclosure from his bank. His wife, Elizabeth, who suffers from dementia, is becoming increasingly prone to violent outbursts. His son Gene is an alcoholic who has been left by his girlfriend. Meanwhile, his adopted daughter Marianne is five months pregnant and refuses to reveal the identity of the father. While Nick tries to find Marianne a husband, he also embarks on a relationship with one of his guests, a woman waiting for her ex-husband's inheritance, which would help Nick get back on his feet.
However, the arrival of a down-on-his-luck boxer and a Bible salesman one night disrupts the equilibrium of the Laine family.
Through the intersecting destinies of its characters, Girl from the North Country depicts the harshness of life with emotion and accuracy.
