What's Evita about?

Evita is one of the world's most iconic musicals. Created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice — the creative team behind Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat — it tells the story of Eva Perón's meteoric rise to fame.

Born into modest circumstances, Eva dreamed of an extraordinary destiny. She left her hometown for Buenos Aires, where she became a model, actress, and radio host. It was her charisma and ambition that led her to meet Colonel Juan Perón. When Perón became president, Eva became Argentina's first lady.

Why should you see Evita?

Evita, a rock opera with Argentinian influences, is a masterpiece of musical theatre, featuring unforgettable melodies such as Don't Cry for Me, Argentina. First released as an album in 1976, the show premiered on stage in London in 1978, winning multiple Olivier Awards before conquering Broadway and the world.

Its success continued unabated with international productions in Madrid, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Japan and Denmark, a blockbuster film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, and regular revivals of songs that have become global hits.

While the plot is based on a biography by Mary Main which was criticised for its lack of objectivity, Lloyd Webber and Rice have always defended their romantic and dramatic interpretation of the character. This controversy has only fuelled the legend surrounding the musical.

Having made its mark on West End history with several thousand performances, Evita returns to London in a bold new production by Jamie Lloyd. It's a chance not to be missed to experience this cult show once again.
