What's 42nd Street about?

42nd Street, an iconic musical and known for its tap dancing numbers, finally returns to London!

Based on the eponymous film from 1933, the show tells the story of Julian Marsh, Broadway producer, who tried to launch a new musical to return to centre stage after the financial crash of 1929. From the auditions to the first performance, this backstage musical takes us through the adventures of creating a show on New York's 42nd Street.

Peggy Sawyer, a young singer who has left home to pursue a career in New York, is hired as an understudy dancer. During the first show she accidentally injures the star of the show, Dorothy Brook, who is forced to give up on the stage forever. Peggy is chosen to replace Dorothy at short notice. 42nd Street is ultimately the story of a fallen and rising star... Will Peggy be up for the challenge?

Why should you see 42nd Street?

42nd Street makes tap dancing the star of the show. A success since its first performance in 1980 in Foxwood Theater on Broadway, this show was written by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the cult film of the 30s has had several revivals. The musical won two Tony Awards in 1981 for Best Musical and Best Choreography.

This new London production is directed by Jonathan Church. The dazzling tap dancing numbers follow one after another at a frenetic pace, making 42nd Street an ultra-dynamic and colourful show where joie de vivre and the dazzling world of Broadway are celebrated.

More than 50 performers come together on stage to perform legendary songs: We’re in the money, Lullaby of Broadway, 42nd Street and Shuffle off to Buffalo. An artistic feat which will stay in your memory forever!

Fantastic, incredible choreography. Top actors, singers and dancers! My friend wasn't excited about an evening of tap dancing but by the end, he loved it! You don't need to understand loads of English to understand the story. A great evening. Magnificent theatre... over too soon!

It was great. The orchestra, incredible singers and dancers, magnificent costumes and a touch of burlesque is just what was needed… an excellent night and very simulating even if we didn't understand all the English anecdotes. A must see musical, you'll come away in a good mood.

It was an incredible show. Absolutely perfect. Everything came together to create an excellent evening. The actors/singers and dancers are top quality as well as the costumes and high-quality staging. Everyone on stage and in the audience was enthusiastic. A huge congratulations to this cast, producer, director, costume designers and technicians. I saw the show in Paris and didn't think twice about seeing it again in London. Bravo!
